Winter Park Towers Pen Pal Performance '04-'05
Written by L.A. students

Introduction:
(wearing jacket with top hat)
Nicholas:  Hi, my name is Nick and here's the shtick.  The Amazing Bone is a wonderful story of good and evil.  Our class liked the story so much that we decided to write a storytelling, poem, song, dance and rap and dedicate it to you, our Pen Pals.  We hope you enjoy the show.

Character Introductions:
Nicholas:  Let's begin our program by introducing the main characters from William Steig's The Amazing Bone.

Pearl (pink dress, bonnet, holding purse, wearing pig nose)
Amelia:  My name is Pearl.  I like to twirl.  Try to think - my favorite color's pink!  I hope you don't like bacon and that you are a vegetarian.  But if you're not, just don't eat me, please!  My hobbies are playing with my best friend, Bone, reading, of course, and going to school.  My friend Bone is not an ordinary bone - he can talk!  He's so amazing, but sometimes he talks too much.  O.K., Bone, tell a little about yourself.

Bone (dressed in white)
Beth:  Yo, I'm Bone, and I ain't no chicken bone either!  My hobbies are talking, hanging out with my best friend, Pearl, and shrinking evil foxes that try to eat Pearl.  My critics say that only witches are my friends, but I stopped hanging out with them years ago.  Being the bold hero of the story can be tiring, but what can I say?  I was born with talent!  I know what you're about to ask.  Am I in a relationship currently?  Unfortunately, no.  It's a real pity that no male version of my species has been created, but if there had been, I'm sure they would love me!  Well, now that you know a little about me, please let me introduce the villain of this story, Fox.

Fox (vest, cane, top hat, drawn on whiskers and nose with eyebrow pencil, wearing hair in ponytail)
Elizabeth:  Hello, I'm Fox.  Even though a play a mean character in the show, I'm really a nice person. (speaking to camera man) NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY PLEASE!  My hobbies are cooking, hunting, and an occasional swim. Don't believe a word Bone says. In fact, I've written an acrostic poem to prove how sensitive a really am. (takes poem out of vest pocket, begins to read)

Song
(everyone on stage - Alexander, Nicholas, Megan, Kathryn in front with microphones)
Nicholas: (steps out from back) Do you believe in magic?  Here's a song to get you in the spirit.

Do you believe in magic?
In a young bone's heart.
How the music can free her,
Whenever it starts.

And its magic,
If the music is groovy,
It makes you feel happy,
Like an old time story.

I'll tell you about the magic
That will free your soul,
But it's like trying to tell a fox not to eat poor Pearl! Whoooaa!

If you believe in magic, don't bother to eat,
If its just pig meat or bacon and ham.
Just go and listen,
It'll start with a smile.
It won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try!

Your teeth will start chomping,
But you can't seem to eat.
How I eat pig,
It just blows your mind.

Do you believe in magic?
In a young bone's heart.
How the music can free her,
Whenever it starts, and maybe, if the music is right,
I'll eat you tomorrow,
It's so late at night.

We'll go eating another night, you'll see.
All the magic's in the music and the music's in me,
Yeah!

Do you believe in magic? Yeah.
Believe in the magic in a young bone's soul.
Believe in the magic not to eat poor Pearl.
Believe in the magic that can set Pearl free.

AAAAAAHhhhhh! talkin' about the magic.
Like I do believe.
Do you believe in magic?
Like I do believe.

Nicholas: Now that we all believe in magic, let's get to the storytelling by Kimberly Baker and Monica Humphries.

(Kimberly and Monica enter wearing matching sweaters and carrying a large book - story pasted inside)
There once was a pig named Pearl,
She was a very silly girl.
She was walking through the forest,
With a smile on her face,
When all of a sudden she heard something in her walk.
She was in shock! She couldn't even talk!
She saw a bone on the ground,
And that was the thing that made the sound!
They started to be each other's best friend,
This friendship they knew would never end.
While they were walking down the street,
Robbers came down a hill.
Pearl and the bone just stood very still.
They wanted her purse,
Pearl thought she was cursed,
And she didn't know what to do.
Pearl and the bone started to run,
And it seemed like the robbers were having fun.
Then all of a sudden they ran into a fox,
Pearl and the bone picked up some rocks,
And started to throw them at the fox.
But the fox didn't care,
He was as tough as a bear.
The fox was going to have Pearl for dinner,
At his house,
Pearl cried so hard that she ruined her blouse.
Right before she was about to be eaten,
The bone said strange words, like
Razzmatazz, Kabam, Ag-mash, and Spam!
The fox started shrinking to the size of a mouse,
Pearl and the bone then escaped from his house!
When Pearl and the Bone came home,
Her parents asked, "Where did you roam?"
She told them the story and it took over an hour,
After that, she picked a flower for the bone.
Pearl said, "Welcome to your new home!"

PoemJenny holds up poem poster
Nicholas:  You know the characters, you heard the song, the story was told, but there's much more to know.  A poem was written in honor of Pearl, Bone, and Fox shortly after the legend was told.  Mary and Trisha would like to present a poetic tribute to these amazing characters.

The Amazing Bone

There once was a pig named Pearl,
She wore a pretty dress that twirled.
She stopped at the forest,
To take a rest,
She said, "I love everything!"
She didn't sound like a pest.
Then she heard something.
She looked everywhere to see.
Then she saw the thing,
Right next to a tree.
It was a bone,
That talked with a voice from its head.
"I can make any noise", she said.
Soon they met armed robbers,
Bone said, "Go away, you silly clodhoppers!"
The robbers ran away.
Pearl had a big day!
But then Pearl and Bone were captured by a fox,
He treated them like Chicken Pox.
They were locked in a room,
Pearl felt like she was doomed.
The fox opened the lock,
And seized Pearl and the Bone like a rock.
The bone started chanting,
The fox started shrinking,
And the bone earned a home on a silver tray.
Bone sang Pearl to sleep every night after that,
Good glory, they had a big day!

RapJenny holds up rap poster
Nicholas:  This is for all you hip hoppers out there! Word up, we've got a rap by Tábata, Cameron, Jackson, and Raymond. Fo' shizzle! The hip-hop dancers are Gisela, Kacey, Kendall, Megan, and Amelia, Melody. (all six dancers wearing track/sweat suits step up to front, two dancers on either side of the rappers)

Yo!
There is a pig named Pearl.
She's a lucky, lucky girl.
She found a big, cool, bone.
It's as hard as a stone.
It's so cool, it's like a tool.
It makes the coolest sounds, like roars and big, loud pounds.
It was lost by a witch who knew some magic.
It's really, really kind of traaaaaagic.
While they were going home they had to moan.
Yo, Yo, Yo!
Then that pig talked and decided to take a walk.
They bumped into three fox robbers, then ran home.
They took another walk, and ran into a fox.
Man, that fox said, "Here's a good dinner!"
He took Pearl and Bone to his house and started boiling that water right up.
Yo! Pearl and the bone talked for a while on how to escape.
The fox said, "Come in, little piggy!"
Wow! They got really scared!
That pig and bone knew they were going to get fried, but then the bone said,
"Snizzle, Fizzle, Cofizzle, Nizzle, and Codizzle!"
That fox shrank to the size of an ant.
Yo!
Pearl missed her mom and dad, that's why she was so mad.
But when she got home, she showed them the bone,
And told them that the bone could talk!
Pearl told the whole story,
And the bone said, "Hello! Who's that fellow?"
They ate a big feast, then went to sleep.
They became best friends!
Yo! Yo! Yo!

Nicholas:  REMIX! Yo, by Grant and Maddy!

Amazing bone, amazing bone.
A pig named Pearl invited you home.
You became best friends,
And always will be.
It's really kind of sweet, if you ask me.
You were very kind,
You helped save the day,
And now you deserve a big hooray.
HOORAY !!!
I'm sorry to say,
But there are some bad parts in this play,
Bone and Pearl run into trouble a couple of times,
But the bone saves the day with some magic words that rhyme.
They walk out of the fox's house,
Leaving him the size of a mouse.
The story is told, Pearl's parents don't believe,
Until they hear the bone give a loud sneeze.
That's the end of us!

Bobby and Jenny close the show:  Bobby has been dressed as a bone throughout the show.

Bobby:  Well that's all folks!
Jenny:   Hey, are you a magic bone too?
Bobby:  I thought you'd never notice!
Jenny:  I have someone for you to meet.
